How to Prevent and Protect Rims from Curb Rash

Have you ever wondered why some car rims retain their original striking appearance all year long?

You may think the owners of these cars have a secret or they use professional car detailing in Ibiza.

But actually, they know the prevention measures to safeguard their car rims.

Like when an alloy comes into contact with cement, the outcome is terrible.

Or every time the rim makes a noise when it hits something, it indicates severe damage.

The worst-case situation is when the rims' lifespan is compromised to the point where they take an odd shape.

Fortunately, you can prevent that by keeping your vehicle’s rims protected from curb rash. Here’s how to do that:

Tips to prevent and protect car rims from curb crush

Avoid Potholes

Potholes can damage a number of parts of your car, including your rims.

Hitting a bump can result in rim scratches, curb rash, and even bent rims, which can cause damage to your tire.

When driving, be aware of your surroundings, especially after the rain, when potholes are most common.

Wash your rims

Many car owners regularly wash their vehicles, but some neglect to clean them.

Maintaining your rims' cleanliness is essential for your vehicle's appearance and value.

The simplest way to clean your rims is to wipe them down with a cloth, or you can use a rim washing service at your neighborhood car wash.

Be aware of curbs

It would be best to stay careful while doing parallel parking, as it’s the main contributor to curb rush.

The key to mastering parallel parking is making sure you allow enough space (but not too much) between your car's wheels and the curb.

Try wheel rim protectors

If you're concerned about damaging your wheels, you should consider purchasing wheel rim protectors.

These blades can be mounted directly on the rims of your treasured car for additional protection, and they won't cost you an arm and a leg.

How to fix curb rash on wheels

Step#1:

Put on your safety gear because to finish this project, you'll need to sand, apply putty, prime, paint, and use a clear coat.

While working with paint, paint thinner, sandpaper, or primer, wearing protective eyewear, gloves, and a mask is crucial.

Step#2:

To smooth out the metal in the damaged region, use 400-grit sandpaper and smooth down the scratched area.

Don't move far beyond the damaged area. There's no need to undertake any more work than is necessary.

Continue sanding until you smooth the damage out.

Step#3:

Let the spot putty dry after applying it to the scratched areas. It works with any brand of automotive spot putty.

Use a putty knife and a small amount of the product to fill in the damaged area.

Try to apply a very thin layer to the region. After that, wait for the putty to cure, which usually only takes 30 minutes.

Step#4:

Use 400-grit sandpaper to remove the extra putty. Sand off the excess putty once it has dried.

Smooth the putty with 400-grit sandpaper until it’s even and level with the rest of the rim.

Step#5:

Apply more putty and sand the area again if required. You can also add more putty if the damage is severe or you sanded off too much.

Use the same method as before, making sure to wait until the putty is completely dry before sanding the second layer.

Step#6:

Use a scouring pad to remove the clear finish from the rest of the rim.

Even though you can try, it would be extremely challenging to match the paint perfectly to the color of your rims.

Repainting the entire rim in a single, solid color is preferable. The surface must not be glossy in order for the paint to settle.

Scratch the entire rim with a scouring pad for a matte appearance.
