Thinking of Installing Solar Panels? Read This Before You Do

A few years ago, the thought of converting sunlight into energy was non-existent. If someone had even suggested anything of the sort, they would’ve been called a loca.

But today, it’s considered one of the most effective ways of fighting climate change. In case you haven’t connected the dots yet, we’re talking about solar power – the process of using the sun’s heat to generate thermal or electrical energy. This is carried out by installing solar panels on roofs in Ibiza.

  • But what exactly are solar panels?
  • How do they work?
  • And most importantly, should you consider installing them on your property?

Well, to find the answer to these questions, you’ll need to take out your reading glasses.

Cause in this blog, we’ll tell you all you need to know about solar panels.

What Are Solar Panels?

As the name suggests, solar panels are a group of electrically connected solar cells that convert sunlight into electricity. They’re enclosed in a frame known as a panel (hence the name solar panel).

In addition to generating electricity, people use solar panels to keep their properties warm during the cold.

How Do Solar Panels Work?

To understand how solar panels work, you should know what they’re made of: PV cells, short for photovoltaic cells (the small squares located across the panel).

When the sun emits heat in the form of light, the PV cells absorb it, resulting in the creation of electrical charges and conversion of direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC).

Furthermore, certain solar panels are equipped with components that store energy. This way, they provide electricity in the absence of the sun.

How Many Types of Solar Panels Are There?

There are four solar panel options available:

  • Monocrystalline Solar Panels – Made from pure silicon, monocrystalline solar panels have one distinguishing feature: their color is dark black. And of all the types, this happens to be the most durable.
  • Polycrystalline Solar Panels – While monocrystalline solar panels are made from only one silicon, polycrystalline solar panels are manufactured using more than one. Consequently, they’re less expensive but are more prone to getting damaged by heat.
  • Thin-film Solar Panels – Thin-film solar panels are the lightest panels you’ll find on the market. These produce a low carbon footprint and, because of portability, are suitable to be installed on buses, boats, and RVs.
  • Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (PERC) Panels – PERC panels work pretty much the same as an ordinary silicone panel. However, one major difference is the additional reflective layer on the back, which protects the cells from heat damage.

Is Maintaining Solar Panels Difficult?

Before installing solar panels, the thought of their upkeep is guaranteed to cross your mind. After all, it’s a big decision – one you shouldn’t make unless you’re 100% sure.

Well, you’d be glad to know that maintaining solar panels is a breeze. They require minimal maintenance, which entails occasional cleaning.

With that said, do not place your solar panels under the shade because, you know, getting sunlight is their whole thing.

Is Installing Solar Panels Easy?

During solar panel installation in Ibiza, you’ll come across two options: either handle the task yourself or hire professionals.

If you ask us, we would highly recommend the latter.

Despite what you see on the internet, installing solar panels is not easy. There are many factors involved ignoring even the smallest of which can lead to disastrous results.

For instance, your roof should be strong enough to handle the weight of solar panels. Similarly, the solar panels should get ample energy to power your whole property or some part of it, depending on your preference.

Therefore, it’s best to let professionals handle it; they’ll consider even the smallest detail, ensuring the solar panels are installed the way they’re meant to.

Do I Need a Permit Before Installing Solar Panels in Ibiza?

Although the answer to this question depends on which part of Ibiza you live in, you can install solar panels in most areas without requesting planning permission.

Either way, consult the concerned government parties to stay out of legal trouble.

What Should I Consider Before Installing Solar Panels?

To make the most of your decision, consider the following factor before installing solar panels:

  • The location of your property
  • The energy required to run the appliances on your property
  • The type of solar panel
  • The condition of your property’s roof
  • The amount of sunlight your property receives
  • The size of the solar panels
